Disclosed are liquid compositions comprising midazolam and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein the pH of the composition is about 6 or higher, the composition further comprises a viscosity enhancing component selected from the group consisting of maltitol syrup, dextrose, glucose, sucrose, carrageen, dextrin, carboxy vinyl polymer, a carbomer resin or mixtures thereof and the viscosity of the composition is about 200CP to about 400CP at 22°C, the composition comprises less than about 200mg/ml cyclodextrin, and at least about 50% of the midazolam is present in solution. Use of these compositions in the treatment of epileptic seizures and inducing anaesthesia is also disclosed.
