FIELD: physics.SUBSTANCE: method includes, when labelling each timber unit, randomly selecting a portion of the surface of the unit on which a special optical label is applied, thereby enabling determination of the region of the surface for which, based on the number and/or list of relative coordinates of intersections of a predetermined number of imaginary lines, having a predetermined position relative to the optical label, and elements of the unique natural structure of the selected portion of the surface, a data set is created and stored for further use, said data set uniquely identifying the labelled timber unit.
