Pt (IV) compounds contain a mitochondrial targeting moiety. An example of a Pt (IV) compound having a mitochondrial targeting moiety is a Pt (IV) cisplatin-based compound. When reduced, the mitochondrial targeting moiety is released, resulting in a Pt (II) therapeutic agent. A Pt (IV) compound containing a mitochondrial targeting moiety can be included in the nanoparticle.
