The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for hadron beam verification. The apparatus makes it possible to verify a plurality of characteristics in a short period of time. The apparatus comprises at least one main degrader element and an associated multiple thickness degrader element. The multi-thickness degrader element may comprise a plurality of patches made of beam degrading material, the patches having a constant but different thickness between the patches. Alternatively, the multi-thickness degrader element can be a wedge-shaped element. By directing the pencil beam to various thicknesses, data points can be obtained that allow estimation of the beam range.
