A subsurface drip irrigation device (10) having a tube (12) having a first layer (14) with a releasable herbicide compound in/on the first layer (14), a second barrier layer (16) adjacent the first layer (14), outlets (26) extending through the tube (12) in a spaced relationship along the tube (12), drippers (20) positioned on an inside surface (18) of the tube (12) in a spaced relationship over an outlet (26) where the barrier layer (16) prevents outward movement of released herbicide through the first layer (14) and directs the released herbicide into a flow path (24) through the tube (12) for exiting the drip irrigation device (10) through an inlet (22) into the dripper (20) and out the outlet (26) in the tube (12) for preventing root intrusion into the device (10).
