Disclosed is a spear (1) or part thereof which allows easy removal of the spear (1) once a fish has been speared. The spear (1) comprises a shaft (2) with a pointed end a barb (3) adjacent the pointed end (5) a barb biasing means (6) and a barb moving means (9) such as a length of wire or cord. The spear (1) is formed such that the biasing means (6) biases the barb to angle outwardly from the shaft (2). The barb moving means (9) can be manipulated to overcome the biasing means to cause the barb (3) to move from a position angled away from the shaft (2) to a position substantially against the shaft (2) in order to facilitate withdrawal of the spear (1) from a speared target.
