The present invention relates to methods of treating an animal having a non-cancerous medical condition that is ameliorated by treatment with a trypsin inhibitor, the method comprising obtaining a biological sample from the animal； testing the sample to obtain a trypsin concentration, wherein, if the trypsin concentration is above the upper limit of the normality, the animal is treated for a suitable period of time by administering to the animal a therapeutically effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier and the compound N-α-(2,4,6-triisopropylphenylsulfonyl)-3-hydroxyamidino-phenylalanine-4-ethoxycarbonylpiperazide, the stereoisomers, racemic mixtures, metabolite, pharmaceutically acceptable salt, crystal, or any combination thereof.
