A method of operating video scopes (100) or medical cameras capturing medical images using graphics processing unit (GPU) resources (90) of a virtual camera control unit (CCU) server (70) connected to a network includes determining an available amount of GPU resources, providing a primary scope or camera to connect to the network, the primary scope or camera including a primary scope or camera setting adjustable within a range from a minimum level that requires a minimum amount of GPU resources to a maximum level that requires a maximum amount of GPU resources, configuring the primary scope or camera setting to a primary scope or camera first level, determining a first desired amount of GPU resources based on the primary scope or camera first level and comparing the first desired amount of GPU resources with the available amount of GPU resources. A system for operating video scopes or medical cameras is also disclosed.
