A surgical instrument having a handle (12) has a longitudinal axis (A) along its height (H). The handle (12) includes an elongate channel (32) extending across the width (W) of the handle (12). The channel (32) has an axis that extends substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (A) of the handle (12). The handle has a major anterior surface, said major anterior surface (64) has a plurality of tactile surfaces (22,24,26,28) extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (A) of the handle (12). Preferably, there are at least four tactile surfaces (22,24,26,28). The handle (12) has proximal and distal ends and the rod (14) emerges from the distal end of the handle. The tactile surfaces (22,24,26,28) are located distal to the elongate channel (32).
