The present invention concerns a surgical instrument 1 comprising an elongate member 12, a support for engaging a rod receiving element 23, and a connection between the elongate member 12 and the support 2. This connection comprises a pivotal articulation 9, and the elongate member 12 is connected to the support via the pivotal articulation 9 so as to be able to pivot independently around at least two perpendicular axes, wherein the elongate member 12 is also longitudinally movable with respect to the support 2. The elongate member 12 has, at a first end, a device 13 for holding a rod 21. The present invention also relates to a method of using this surgical instrument.
