The present invention relates to a cornsalad fruit of the species valerianella locusta, characterised by a genetic determinant which leads to the trait of a significantly smaller fruit width as compared to the width of a V. locusta fruit not having the trait, a corn salad plant of the species V. locusta that can be grown from said fruit, progeny of said plant or fruit, and propagation material suitable for producing said plant or fruit. The present invention further relates to a food product comprising said plant or parts thereof, and the use of said plant or propagation material as germplasm in a breeding program for the development of corn salad plants of the species V. locusta.
