Disclosed is a composition which comprises: an anti-inflammatory (e.g. ibuprofen, copper ibuprofenate, indomethacin, copper indomethacin, naproxen, flurbiprofen and/or celecoxib); two or more metalloprotease inhibitors (preferably including the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline, and the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), or catechin); and an inhibitor of cell activity (i.e. a glucocorticoid steroid) when used in treating a tendon injury in an equine or a canine. Also disclosed is a method for treating a tendon injury in a non-human subject in need thereof, the method including providing a composition comprising a pro-inflammatory cytokine inhibitor; an antioxidant or catechin; and an anti-inflammatory wherein the pro-inflammatory cytokine inhibitor, the antioxidant or catechin and the anti-inflammatory are present in an amount effective to treat the tendon injury; to thereby treat the tendon injury in the non-human subject.
