Systems and methods are provided for collecting platelet products from liquids containing platelets and plasma. Platelet rich plasma is separated from at least some of the other components of the fluid and then further separated into platelet concentrate and platelet poor plasma, where the platelet concentrate is resuspended. Separated platelets (in the form of platelet rich plasma or resuspended platelets) are delivered into a platelet storage container through a size exclusion filter. The size exclusion filter is configured to remove platelet clumps and/or particles larger than platelets from the separated platelets. The additive is then transported through the size exclusion filter into the platelet storage container. Carrying the additive through the size exclusion filter improves the platelet recovery of the platelet product by replacing the separated platelets with the additive, and also destroys the clumps of platelets present in the size exclusion filter.
