A method of treating an inflammatory condition in a patient in need thereof, comprising: providing a therapeutically effective amount of myristic acid in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, administering said myristic acid to said patient, said administration being effective for treating the inflammatory condition. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the patient in need of this, before the introduction of the drug, is defined as suffering from an inflammatory disease. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the patient in need of this also suffers from a bacterial infection. The method of claim 3, wherein administering said myristic acid is effective for treating a bacterial infection. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the patient in need of this is also predisposed to a bacterial infection. A method according to claim 5, characterized in that the administration of said myristic acid is effective in preventing bacterial infection. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the inflammatory disease is periodontitis. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that myristic acid effectively inhibits the release of one or more pro-inflammatory cytokines in a patient in need thereof. The method of claim 8, wherein the myristic acid effectively inhibits monocyte-mediated secretion of one or more of the following pro-inflammatory cytokines selected from the group consisting of IL-Iβ, IL-6, IL-12, IL-8 and MCP-1.10.
