A method of treating a pathological inflammation or inflammatory condition in a subject, comprising administering to the subject through the mucosa an effective amount of interleukin or a fragment or derivative thereof. The method of claim 1, wherein the interleukin is recombinant human interleukin. The method of claim 1 or 2, wherein the interleukin is interleukin-2 (IL-2). The method according to claim 1 or 2, where the introduction through the mucosa is oral administration. The method of claim 4, wherein the introduction is buccal or sublingual. A method according to any one of claims 1, 2, or 5, wherein the inflammatory condition is a chronic inflammatory disease. The method according to any one of claims 1, 2 or 5, wherein the inflammatory condition is selected from arthritis, sinusitis, allergic disorders, psoriasis, acne, inflammatory bowel diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune disorders, Sjogren's syndrome, inflammation of the prostate gland, inflammation of the urinary tract, pancreatitis, vasculitis, diabetes, inflammation of the feet and periodic pain. 8.
