A one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface or bus (36) extends through the end effector, the adapter assembly (14), and the hand-held surgical instrument (10). The hand-held surgical instrument (10) includes a master circuit (34) coupled to the bus (36) and configured to identify or control the adapter assembly (14) or the end effector. A power source (44) is couplable to the bus (36) and configured to provide power to the adapter assembly (14) or the end effector. A first switch connects the master circuit (34) to the bus (36) and a second switch connects the power source (44) to the bus (36). A processor (32) controls operation of the hand-held surgical instrument (10). The controller (30) has a wake-up pin (40) connected to the bus (36) and is configured to receive a presence pulse from the adapter (14) or end effector.
