The present invention relates to impressic acid or derivatives thereof according to the present invention, or to an Eleutherococcus nodiflorus leaf extract comprising the impressic acid or derivatives thereof, and specifically, to a joint/cartilage protective composition comprising the Eleutherococcus nodiflorus leaf, and to a pharmaceutical or a food composition for preventing, treating, or ameliorating a disease which destroys or damages joints or cartilage. The impressic acid or derivatives thereof or the Eleutherococcus nodiflorus leaf extract comprising the impressic acid or derivatives thereof can effectively inhibit the expression of MMP-13, which causes joint destruction, and prevent the decomposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) of joints by inhibiting the disappearance of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and proteoglycans to protect the joints when joint destruction is caused.본 발명에 따른 임프레스산(impressic acid) 또는 이의 유도체 자체, 또는 임프레스산 또는 이의 유도체를 포함하는 섬오갈피나무의 추출물, 구체적으로 섬오갈피나무의 잎 추출물을 포함하는 관절 또는 연골 보호용 조성물, 관절이나 연골을 파괴 또는 손상시키는 질환의 예방, 치료 또는 개선용 약학적 또는 식품 조성물에 관한 것이다. 이들은 관절파괴를 일으키는 MMP-13의 발현을 효과적으로 저해하고, 글리코사미노글리칸(GAG) 및 프로테오글리칸 등의 소실을 억제함으로써 관절의 세포외기질(extracellular matrix, ECM) 분해를 방지하여 관절파괴 질환에 있어서 관절을 보호한다.
