The use of phenylephrine particles suitable for solid, semi solid or liquid dosage forms in the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of nasal congestion and/or cold, influenza, allergy, and/or non-allergic rhinitis symptoms are disclosed which will require less frequent administration thereby improving patient compliance. Specifically, the present invention provides for the use of extended release particle comprising a coated drug-resin complex comprising phenylephrine and a cation polystyrene sulfonate in the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of said conditions. In said coated drug-resin complexes the cation polystyrene sulfonate comprises particle sizes of about 74 μm to about 177 μm prior to being combined with the phenylephrine, and the coating comprises cellulose acetate and hydroxypropylcellulose.
