The invention relates to an apparatus for washing shell eggs (126;226) comprising a washing unit and an egg conveyor (4; 104) extending in a longitudinal direction from an egg in-feed (2;102) to an egg outlet (3) and having a transverse direction (T), where said longitudinal direction and said transverse direction define a conveyor plane (222). In the washing unit (6) a plurality of spray nozzles (129,130;229) are arranged above the conveyor plane (222) so that in a first method step the eggs (126;226) can be subjected to a liquid jet from at least one first liquid spray nozzle (129;229) spraying in a first spray direction (135;235), which extends in a non-perpendicular angle in relation to the conveyor plane (222), and in a second method step the eggs can be subjected to a liquid jet from at least one second liquid spray nozzle (130) spraying in a second spray direction (136), which extends in a non-perpendicular angle in relation to the conveyor plane. The first spray nozzle and second spray nozzles are arranged on opposite sides of the egg when seen in the transverse direction and at a distance (d3) above the conveyor plane so that the liquid sprayed in the first spray direction and the liquid sprayed in the second spray direction hits the egg from opposite sides in a downwards angle.
