These portions can be held in a row or pivoted towards each other to place the patient in a sitting position. Each portion includes an upper frame (14) from which opposite longitudinal edges extend from a pair of articulating grip members arranged to move on either side of the patient's torso or pelvis. Each member includes a series of transverse lamellas that are inwardly curved toward each other and can be oriented to securely wrap and capture the load. Thus, the frame and supported patient can be lifted, moved, and placed in the supine or sitting position.
