PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alcohol hepatic failure preventing and ameliorating composition containing an extract of "Tamatsukurikuromon shirouri" (a white pickling melon produced in Tamatsukuri Kuromon) as an active ingredient.
SOLUTION: Models using cells related to alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic hepatic fibrosis or hepatic cirrhosis as alcohol-induced liver diseases are prepared. While paying attention to cell injuries in hepatocytes in regard to alcoholic hepatitis, and while paying attention to collagen production by hepatic stellate cells in regard to alcoholic hepatic fibrosis or hepatic cirrhosis, studies have been earnestly made to elucidate their respective pathogenic mechanisms. As the results, it has been elucidated that an extract of Tamatsukurikuromon shirouri significantly recovers the survival rate of hepatocytes deteriorated by ethanol and that the collagen productivity of hepatic stellate cells exalted by ethanol is markedly lowered. From these results, it has been found out that the extract of Tamatsukurikuromon shirouri is effective for the prevention and amelioration of alcoholic hepatic failures.
