A mat for use in preparing a turf surface (80) comprising natural grass plants (30) is disclosed. The mat comprises a reinforcing root-permeable mat (10) and a removable root-permeable backing (60) located beneath the reinforcing root-permeable mat (10). In use, prior to being laid at a destination site, the removable root-permeable backing is separated from the reinforcing root-permeable mat, so that any roots (34) which engage with and extend through the removable root-permeable backing are substantially removed from the turf surface. Removal of the roots with the removable backing advantageously promotes the growth of new roots. New roots are able to absorb more nutrients and water, which is necessary to grow strong and healthy grass plants and to improve drainage at the destination site. A turf surface adapted to be relocated, a method for growing a turf surface and a method for relocating turf surfaces is also disclosed.
