The present invention relates to a composition for skin whitening having swertiajaponin or an acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. The present invention inhibits tyrosinase activity associated with skin pigmentation without exhibiting cytotoxicity. In particular, it showed excellent inhibitory effect on melanin synthesis with kojic acid used as a positive control. Thus, the composition having swertiajaponin as the active ingredient can be usefully used as a skin whitening cosmetic composition, a skin whitening external preparation for skin, or health functional food.본 발명은 스워티아자포닌 (swertiajaponin) 또는 이의 허용 가능한 염을 유효성분으로 포함하는 피부 미백용 조성물에 관한 것으로, 상기 조성물은 세포 독성을 나타내지 않으면서도, 피부 색소 침착과 관련된 티로시나아제의 활성을 저해하며, 특히, 양성 대조군으로 사용된 코지산과 우수한 멜라닌 합성 저해 효과를 나타냈으므로, 스워티아자포닌을 유효성분으로 포함하는 조성물은 피부 미백용 화장료 조성물, 피부 미백용 피부 외용제 또는 건강기능식품 등으로 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.
