A device to assist breathing includes a central body with outwardly splayed wing members. At least a portion of a lower surface of the central body has at least a roughened portion thereon. In use the device, is held in place in the mouth by engagement of the upper side of the wing members with the upper teeth, which in turn holds the tongue in position via the engagement of at least a portion of the roughened portion of the lower surface of the central body with at least a portion of an upper surface of the tongue, while at the same time the device holds the lower jaw in place via the engagement of the lower side of the wing members with the lower teeth.
