PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transdermal delivery system for administering sufentanil through the skin for a long-term pain treatment.SOLUTION: The invention relates to a transdermal delivery system for administering sufentanil. The system provides a substantially constant delivery rate of sufentanil over a single application administration of at least about 48 hours and the constant delivery rate is sufficient to establish and maintain plasma sufentanil concentration having a minimum to maximum ratio of about 1.8 or less over the relevant administration period. A monolithic system including a pressure-sensitive adhesive matrix containing sufentanil in an amount exceeding the solubility of sufentanil in the pressure-sensitive adhesive matrix is preferable. The system maintains the analgesia administration of sufentanil at 0.01-200 μg/hr for at least 3 days or more.
