PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retort sterilizing method of a paper container which is capable of efficiently performing sterilization in a short time, and less degraded in appearance even after the sterilization.
SOLUTION: The steam type retort sterilization comprises (1) a deaeration step, (2) a heating step by pressurized steam, (3) a drying step and (4) an air cooling step. In the (3) drying step, the steam partial pressure is reduced to <50 kPa and kept for at least one minute while maintaining the temperature and the internal pressure in the heating step. The (3) method for reducing the steam partial pressure in the drying step to <50 kPa is (3-1) a method for repelling steam by introducing heated compressed air, (3-2) a method for performing the heating by a heater while simultaneously repelling steam, or (3-3) a method for performing the exhaust (steam discharge) and substitution with compressed air while simultaneously or alternatively introducing compressed air and steam.
