PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retort sterilizing method of a paper container which is capable of efficiently performing sterilization in a short time, and less degraded in appearance even after the sterilization.
SOLUTION: The steam type retort sterilization comprises (1) a deaeration step, (2) a heating step by heated steam, (3) a drying step, and (4) an air cooling step. The (3) drying step is a drying step in which the steam partial pressure is reduced by &ge30 kPa while keeping the temperature and the internal pressure in the heating step, keeping the steam partial pressure for at least one minute, and performing the reduced-pressure drying, and also substituting compressed air by steam.
