A personal care or home care product comprising a personal care or home care base composition and a particulate component comprising a self-assembled microparticles. The self-assembled microparticles may comprise an acid having two or more acid groups and an organic base and the molar ratio of acid groups to basic groups may be 0.6 to 1.3:1. The microparticles may be 0.5-10 microns in size. The microparticles may be obtained by contacting the acid and base in a hydrophilic solvent wherein the acid is insoluble or sparing soluble in the solvent and the base is soluble in the solvent. The solvent may be an aqueous solution or a water in oil emulsion. The microparticles may comprise a bis acid, particularly a bis-carboxylic fatty acid in which terminal carboxylic acids are linked by a hydrophobic region such as brassylic acid, sebacic acid or azelaic acid. The base may be a nitrogen containing base such as N-methylmorpholine, N,N-dimethylaminoethanol, 4-dimethylaminopyridine, imidazole, 1-methylimidazole, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), didecyldimethylammonium chloride, dodecyldipropylenetriamine or poly epsilon lysine. The microparticles may be cross-linked to give a macroporous material.
