A handheld needle guard (S1) for use in cannulation of the umbilical cord (NS) of neonates has an umbilical cord channel (1) which, along its length, is composed of a securing portion (2) and, following on from the latter, a cannulation portion (3). The securing portion (2) has a grip part (4), which protrudes from the underside of the umbilical cord channel (1).
