Compositions and methods for stabilizing luminescent substrates such as coelenterazine or functional analogs thereof are disclosed herein. The functional analog may be a purimarine. The composition may comprise a luminescent substrate, a thionucleoside and an organic solvent, wherein the thionucleoside is present in an amount effective to stabilize the luminescent composition against degradation. The methods provided herein stabilize the luminescent substrate against degradation by contacting the luminescent substrate with an effective amount of thionucleoside in the presence of an organic solvent.
