A mowing apparatus comprising: a) a body and b) a mowing head incorporating a blade the mowing apparatus formed such that when it is in use it can be used to mow grass and/or weeds around a row of plants such that each time the mowing head contacts or is in close proximity to the base of one of the plants it swings in an arc away from the base and, if the swing reaches a predetermined amount then the mowing head automatically moves substantially laterally towards the body, such that the grass and/or weeds is/are cut around the base of each plant without cutting the base of the plant itself.
