An endoscope system includes a plurality of types of endoscopes, a signal processing apparatus configured to perform video processing for an output signal of an image pickup device mounted on the endoscope connected to the signal processing apparatus, peripheral apparatuses connected to the signal processing apparatus, an endoscope-type detecting section configured to detect a type of the endoscope connected to the signal processing apparatus, and a function setting section configured to set a plurality of functions in the endoscope system including the signal processing apparatus, the endoscope connected to the signal processing apparatus, and the peripheral apparatuses. The function setting section automatically sets the plurality of functions respectively to appropriate setting states according to the type of the endoscope, the connection of which is detected.
