A fastener cartridge for use with a surgical instrument (100) is disclosed. The fastener cartridge and/or surgical instrument can include an anvil (124). The fastener cartridge can comprise a cartridge body (240) including a deck and a plurality of fastener cavities (244). The fastener cartridge can comprise fasteners (460) at least partially stored within the fastener cavities, and a firing member (790) configured to move the fasteners toward the anvil. The firing member can comprise a first ramp (791a, 791b) and a second ramp (794a, 794b) configured to lift the fasteners toward the anvil, and means for extending the first ramp relative to the second ramp. The fastener cartridge can further comprise means for retracting the first ramp relative to the second ramp. In various instances, the first ramp and/or the second ramp can directly lift the fasteners.
