PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye composition whose dye is stable to alkalizing agents and oxidizing agents, is not decomposed during hair dyeing, has a high dyeing force, can firmly impart a brilliant color to hair, has excellent fastness to light, washing, sweats, frictions and heat, and is reduced in the fading with time, and to provide a method for dyeing hair with the hair dye composition.

SOLUTION: This hair dye composition comprises an azo dye represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R1is a hydrogen atom or a substituent A is a monocyclic or dicyclic aromatic heterocyclic residue which may have one or more substituents and having a free valence on a carbon atom R1and A do not contain any of carboxyl group, sulfo group and quaternary ammonium group in their structures).
