The system comprises a compression monitor (2) adapted to move in accordance with the chest of the patient (1), the compression monitor (2) is operable to provide an acceleration signal. The system further comprises a reference sensor (119) adapted to move in accordance with a surface (80) supporting the patient (1), the reference sensor (119) operable to provide a reference signal, and a processor configured to combine the acceleration signal and the reference signal from the reference sensor (119) to determine the compression depth. The determined compression depth takes into account motion of the surface (80).
