PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide broad spectrum β-lactamase inhibitors which exhibit potent antibiotic activity.SOLUTION: Compounds represented by the formula (I) are designed such that cleavage of the beta-lactam ring generates reactive moieties which can inactivate β-lactamase. Also provided are methods of making β-lactamase inhibitors and β-lactam antibiotics exhibiting such inhibition.
