Lustrous black interference pigments comprise a substrate with a coating (A) of magnetite, a colorless coating (B) comprising one or more layers with a refractive index of 1.8 or less, optionally a non-covering coating (C) of highly refractive light-absorbing material, and an outer protective coating (D). Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing pigments as above by coating a lamellar substrate by wet chemical methods or by chemical or physical vapor deposition； (2) pigment preparations or dry preparations comprising one or more pigments as above, binders and optional additives, water and/or one or more solvents； (3) dry preparations in the form of pellets, granules, chips, briquettes or sausages comprising pigments as above.
