A dental appliance and method of treatment are disclosed. The dental appliance attaches to predetermined teeth of an upper jaw of a patient, and includes a constraint mechanism positioned above a patient's tongue, wherein the constraint mechanism is shaped to limit movement of a posterior zone of the patient's tongue. The constraint mechanism allows at least an anterior zone and lateral edges of the patient's tongue to perform movements necessary for speech and swallowing. The method of treatment includes use of the dental appliance to reduce the volume of a patient's tongue and enlarge the airways, and can be combined with use of another dental appliance to correct another aspect of the patient's tongue.Se describen un aparato dental y un método de tratamiento. El aparato dental se une a dientes predeterminados de una mandíbula superior de un paciente, e incluye un mecanismo de contención colocado por arriba de la lengua de un paciente, en donde el mecanismo de contención se forma para limitar el movimiento de una zona posterior de la lengua del paciente. El mecanismo de contención permite que al menos una zona anterior y bordes laterales de la lengua del paciente realicen los movimientos necesarios para la locución y deglución. El método de tratamiento incluye el uso del aparato dental para reducir el volumen de la lengua del paciente y para agrandar las vías aéreas y se puede combinar con el uso de otro aparato dental para corregir otro aspecto de la lengua del paciente.
