The present invention relates to a method for the extraction of algae retaining higher antioxidant activity in which marine algae of the classes Phaeophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Rhodophyceae are extracted by a method such that lyses of the algae occurs under chilled conditions. The method includes, cleaning from the surface of the algae, the impurities and epiphytes followed subsequently by blotting the surface water of the material, crushing the material in blender with liquid nitrogen, extracting the material in a range of solvents i.e. ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol and water and increasing the purity of the homogenate by centrifugation. This method prevents the denaturing of the heat labile antioxidants present in the algae thus increasing their antioxidant activity. This increased antioxidant activity is measured by performing various assays from the algal extracts.
