A food information providing apparatus includes an optical spectrum obtaining unit configured to obtain an optical spectrum of a food which a user is to take, a depth image obtaining unit configured to obtain a depth image of the food, and a controller configured to identify a kind of the food based on the optical spectrum of the food, wherein the controller sets a figure with reference to a food area detected from the depth image of the food, and calculates at least one of a volume, a total calorie, and a suitable intake calorie of the identified food based on the set figure.
