The system includes a tag magazine (30) and an applicator having a pair of jaws, the tag magazine (30) adapted to supply discrete identification tags (31), each comprising a male (33) and female (34) engagement portion, sequentially to the jaws which, upon actuation, engage the male (33) and female (34) portions of the tag (31) through the ear of an animal placed between the jaws. The magazine is loaded with different types of identification tag (31) arranged to supply the different types of tag (31) to the jaws of the applicator in a repeating order of the different types as the jaws of the device are repeatedly actuated.
