PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for deriving an amount of dense tissue from the digital mammographic image representation.SOLUTION: A target region within the image is determined, and the values hint(x, y) within the target region for respective pixels are computed at respective positions (x, y) within the target region, and the amount of the dense tissue under the pixels is expressed in the expression. The positions p(x, y) represent the pixel values at the positions (x, y) of the digital mammographic image. Pfat is a reference fat pixel value. &mufat and &muint are linear attenuation coefficients of the fat tissue and the dense tissue. E is the mono-energetic energy value of an X-ray source when the image is recorded.
