A syringe used to administer a drug fluid, the syringe comprising a cylinder, an end cap of a cylinder attached to a cylinder, a piston arranged to move forward inside the cylinder during injection, a needle configured to retract from the first position after injection, wherein the needle protrudes forward from the end cap of the cylinder, into a second position in which the needle does not protrude forward from the end cap of the cylinder, and the needle retraction mechanism, the syringe having a plurality of holding their liquid surfaces, which form a variable volume chamber that contains the drug fluid prior to injection and which decreases in volume when the piston is advanced forward during the injection, the liquid retaining surfaces containing one or more materials that are substantially inert to the drug fluid and suitable for pharmaceutical use. 2. The syringe according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the liquid-holding surfaces is made of glass. The syringe according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the fluid-holding surfaces is made of metal. The syringe according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the fluid-retaining surfaces is made of a polymeric material that is inert with respect to the drug fluid. The syringe according to claim 1, in which none of the liquid-holding surfaces is made of plastic. The syringe according to claim 1, wherein the drug fluid is a liquid. The syringe according to claim 1, in which the medicinal fluid contains a liquid containing dispersed solids1.
