The present invention is related to a compound capable of modulating the activity and/or expression of the protein kinase GRK5, thereby enhancing the expression and/or release of insulin. The invention is further related to methods of identifying said compounds for the treatment of diseases of the carbohydrate metabolism. The invention is further related to methods of treatment of diseases of the carbohydrate metabolism, particularly diabetes mellitus type 2.
