Reconstituted HDL formulations, methods of treatment including them, and their use are provided for treating patients after an acute myocardial infarction (MI) event. The reconstituted HDL formulation includes stabilizers such as apolipoproteins, lipids, surfactants and sucrose. Treatment of MI patients with repeated infusions of rHDL enhances the ability to withdraw cholesterol and does not result in significant changes in liver or kidney function.
