An aspiration catheter system for navigation within a vascular lumen andthrombectomy of a thrombus. The systemincludes a tubular catheter member having an open distal end defming acatheter lumen, a vacuum source, a rotational drive system,a flexible shaft having a channel coupled to the rotational drive system forrotational movement in response thereto, and an optionalguidewire selectively inserted at least partially within the the flexibleshaft. The flexible shaft is at least partially disposed within thetubular catheter member configured for uncoupled rotational and translationalmotion therein and to optionally define a corkscrewmotion in response to rotational driving force by the drive system thatresults in formation of hydrodynamic vortices within the catheterlumen. In some embodiments, the guidewire member and the flexible shaft arecollectively sufficient to navigate the vascular lumenand steer translational movement of the tubular catheter member there along.
