PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a humectant which has an excellent moisture-retaining property and an excellent conditioning effect, and gives natural finishes.SOLUTION: The humectant is characterized by including poly-&gamma-L-glutamic acid and/or a salt thereof, and a rosemary extract as active ingredients. The poly-&gamma-L-glutamic acid preferably has an average mol. wt. of &ge1,000,000, and is a poly-&gamma-L-glutamic acid cross-linked product having a molecule-intercross-linked structure.
