The magnetic resonance imaging apparatus of an embodiment is provided with an imaging unit and a shield. The imaging unit performs magnetic resonance imaging of a subject by transmitting a high frequency signal from a high frequency coil while the respective magnetic fields of a gradient magnetic field coil and a superconducting magnet are formed. The shield, together with the gradient magnetic field coil, forms a gradient magnetic field for the magnetic resonance imaging.
