A handle assembly for a surgical stapler may include a rotatable actuation shaft. The actuating shaft is in a first rotational orientation state in which the actuating shaft can operate the jaw assembly in repeatable open and closed modes, and the actuating shaft can operate the jaw assembly in staple firing mode. And a third rotational orientation state in which the actuating shaft can operate the jaw assembly in the retracted mode. The handle assembly may include a rotation mechanism configured to discontinuously position the rotatable actuation shaft in one of the rotational orientation states.
