A method of determining a position of an electromagnetic (EM) sensor. The method including generating a magnetic field, storing in memory an ultra-high definition (UHD) map of the magnetic field, and placing an EM sensor within the magnetic field. The method further includes sampling the magnetic field with the EM sensor at one point, conducting a global search of the UHD map of the magnetic field to identify a point in the magnetic field with the smallest difference from the point sampled by the EM sensor, conducting a local search of a portion of the UHD map in proximity to identified point to determine a new point in the magnetic field with the smallest difference from the point sampled by the EM sensor, and iterating the local search until the difference between the new point in the magnetic field and the sampled point is below a threshold.
